Sport Horses Farm is located on southern Vancouver Island, which is the
largest island along Canada's Pacific coast. We are just 15 minutes from
the beautiful city of Victoria, which is the capital of British Columbia,
and just an hour and a half ferry ride to Port Angeles in Washington State.
We are a family owned and operated breeding farm which has expanded and
changed in some directions over the years.
Our
love of horses and breeding aims first focused on the Trakehner breed
in 1982, when we bought the German approved Trakehner stallion BLITZWIND,
who was a half brother the Olympic jumping gold winner ABDULLAH.
Our first purebred Trakehner foundation mare was a Blitzwind daughter....LILLY.....whose
dam LIBELLA II was a foundation mare of Hilda Gurney's very successful
breeding program.
When
Lilly was bred to ENRICO CARUSO in 1991, she produced our ATA approved
colt LARAZZI, whose wonderful temperament and rideability enabled us to
compete and win both Dressage in Canada and Hunter championships in Indio,
California before he was 6 years old.
Over the next few years, we became more aware that there were not enough
quality purebred warmblood mares in our area, and that generally there
was not enough thought about the huge importance of the mare in the breeding
'equation'. This
led us to find and import 2 premium fillies of the Holsteiner breed from
Germany in the later 1990's and to add imported premium Trakehner, Hanoverian
and Oldenburg mares over the last years.
It has been a lot of work and a lot of fun, and we are grateful to have
met so many interesting and wonderful people here and in Europe who have
helped and shared their experiences and knowledge with us.
